Creativity is Big Business

August 12, 2007

Did you know that Creative Industries are a Smart State Priority?

WHY?
Because they are innovation-led, knowledge -intensive and highly exportable. (Queensland Government, 2007)

The Queensland Government’s ongoing strategy, “Creativity is Big Business- A framework for the future” supports business growth in Queensland’s creative industries with a focus on the key areas of export, creative industries profile, business skills and research. Queensland’s creative industries are worth $3.4billion annually and generate $1.1 billion in annual exports.
28 000 people were employed in creative industries in 2004, increasing to 67 000 in 2006. Employment within creative industries is expected to exceed 70 000 in 2007.
There are currently 25 000 creative industries businesses operating in Queensland. This represents a five year growth rate of 4.6 per cent compared with a national growth rate of 3.7 per cent. (Queensland Government, 2007)

What do you think this kind of information will mean for you and your creative future?

Cool resources??

August 12, 2007

Hi Everyone

i hope you have been keeping up with the resources etc attached to all of this. I would like you all to tag at least one interesting resource by the end of the week…

Ken Robinson

August 6, 2007

I’ve been reading Ken Robinson’s new book “Out of our minds – Learning to be creative” (if you haven’t already checked out his podcast on how schools are killing creativity then you should have).  Robinson (2007) argues that “Creativity is related to culture. Cultural conditions can kindle or kill creativity. We do not have creative ideas in a vacuum. Individual creativity is stimulated by the work, ideas and achievements of other people. We stand on the shoulders of others to see further.” (p. 11) Whose shoulders will you stand on? Where will you go to get your next big idea?

Robinson (2007) goes on to say “The great revolutions in human history have often been detonated by new ideas: by new ways of seeing that have shattered old certainties …. Creative insights often occur by making connections between ideas or experiences that were previously unconnected. Just as intelligence in a single mind is interactive, creativity is often interdisciplinary.” (p. 11)

What are some of the most interesting inventions you are aware of? How did the inventor come up with their idea? What are the key lessons you will take away with you in regards to their stories?  Why don’t you log on to http://www.idea-a-day.com/ and register to get an idea a day – or more interestingly  why don’t you contribute an idea to them and see where it ends up… do something random today and tell us all about it…

week 4 and counting

July 30, 2007

It’s hard to believe that it is week 4 already. What I am curious about is how things are going for everyone. How does Mode 1 and Mode 2 knowledge impact on how you think about the world? How will you interact in the world in the twenty-first century? What skills and knowledge will you need to have?

I am waiting with baited breath to hear from you….
